Contribute to the Static Gear Work Group

Following discussions at the recent RIFG meeting on 24 August, the Static Gear Work Group is going to discuss the case for and against landing berried hen lobsters, escape panels, parlour creels, v-notching, effort control, soak times, illegal fishing etc.

The Work Group will consider these issues as follows: firstly, a questionnaire will be circulated by email to consider, discuss with colleagues and respond. There may be supplementary questions, depending if clarification or additional detail is required. The Chair will collate the data and circulate initial findings for comment, then prepare a report for discussion by the full RIFG.

These are all potentially contentious issues which means the RIFG needs to hear from as many static gear fishermen as possible to get a balanced view. All you will have to do is answer a questionnaire and some follow up emails (there is no need to attend any meetings unless you want to).

The Static Gear Work Group previously investigated gear conflict issues which was followed by informed discussion at RIFG meetings. A number of recommendations were consquently made to Marine Scotland and Scottish Ministers that have now been acted on to deliver new gear marking guidelines, with new legislation due next year.

  • A Simple Guide to Opening a Fishery has been produced by Marine Scotland working with Scottish Natural Heritage. The guide is for inshore fishermen wishing to diversify in to catching different species and it explains what they need to do (LINK).
  • To help avoid marine spatial conflict, the NECRIFG Management Committee has produced a Spatial Management Position Statement which can be used by fishermen and associations when responding to planning applications by other marine users (LINK).
